At first glance, the viola, this bowed string instrument can easily be confused with a violin by an uninitiated listener. Indeed, apart from the size, outwardly they are similar. But one has only to listen to its timbre – the difference is immediately noticeable, surprisingly soft and slightly muffled sound resembles a contralto – soft and expressive.
